Day Trading Myth...

The popular myth surrounding day trading is something I hear often from both prospective students, and those who have no interest in trading alike.

When this myth crops up in conversation, it usually goes something along the lines of:

Novice: 'So what do you do for a living?'
Trader: "I'm a day trader."
Novice: 'Yikes, how do you cope with sitting in front of a screen all day?' Trader: "Actually, I only work a couple of hours a day at most..."

The majority of people seem to have this image of a day trader as someone who sits glued to a monitor 12 hours a day! This mythical figure has no need to take refreshment breaks, can't stop for lunch, and dare not turn round to talk to someone else in the room - presumably for the fear of missing a huge stock market crash and getting wiped out in the few seconds their eyes leave the screen.

Perhaps it's Hollywood that's given rise to this stereotype, but whatever, it is (thankfully) wholly inaccurate! On some trades you only need to spend a two hours a day in front of a trading screen, and only one hour of that would be spent actually watching charts. Sometimes it's a little more, sometimes a little less, but two hours would be the absolute maximum.

Is it possible to trade profitably each day in such a short period of time? Of course it is!

The fortunate thing for us as day traders, is we can forecast with great accuracy, when the action is going to occur. Markets are predictable in terms of when they will make their moves. There are certain times of the trading day that are much more volatile than others. It stands to reason therefore, that we only need to be around to take advantage of those times of the day. For the rest of the time, there's no need for us to be glued to the screen.

So armed with the knowledge of when there are going to be tradable moves, and knowing the times of day that the best moves happen, you can plan your trading day accordingly. Happily, there is more than one "action time zone" during the day, so you are not a slave to the market. In other words, plan your trading around your life, not the other way round.

I hope that clears up the common misconception of the day trader as a someone who is permanently glued to their chair and their screens! Trading is like any other activity... the right knowledge and a little preparation makes for a much easier and more profitable life.

The Knowledge...
